Chapter 9

That was sleep? Jessica grumbled silently as she dragged herself downstairs early the next morning. Bad dreams about Jeremy and their ill-fated love had kept her tossing all night. Her parents, Elizabeth, and Sue were all in the breakfast nook of the kitchen when she came in.

"Goodness, what time is it?" Mrs. Wakefield looked at her watch in alarm. "Oh, I thought I was late. But you're early," she told Jessica cheerfully.

"Uh-huh." Jessica groped her way to the fridge and took out the milk, then somehow managed to get down a bowl and a box of cereal. She pried her eyes open enough to read the label. "Don't we have any cereal that isn't good for you?" she complained. "I need something with sugar and artificial coloring to help me get going in the morning."

Her family laughed.

"Toast, Jessica?" her father offered. "I'm making myself some."

"No, thanks." Plunking herself down at her place, she filled her bowl with cereal and milk. Mechanically she took a bite and started chewing. And chewing. And chewing. "What's in this stuff? Wood fibers? It's not even getting soggy."

"Someone got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning," Elizabeth observed annoyingly.

"What of it?" Jessica snarled, turning to read the comics in the Sweet Valley News.

Sue laughed and poured a glass of juice. "Well, I think it's a beautiful morning," she said. "The best morning of my entire life, in fact."

Sue waved her left hand in front of Jessica's face. Jessica saw a streak of flashing light.

"Notice anything different?" Sue asked.

Jessica felt dizzy as she stared at the huge, sparkling diamond on Sue's third finger.

"Isn't that a beautiful ring, Jessica?" Mrs. Wakefield prompted.

"Yes, beautiful," Jessica said, watching it flash in the sunlight streaming through the kitchen window. Struggling to remember her manners, she forced herself to smile at Sue. "It's gorgeous, Sue. Do you like it?"

"You know I do—it's the one I picked out. But I'm even happier about what it represents—that Jeremy and I are committed to each other, and to each other alone. I almost feel married already." Her smile was as brilliant as her diamond.

"That's great," Jessica said, turning back to her cereal.

"I was so thrilled when Jeremy gave it to me last night—I almost cried. I guess that sounds silly."

"No, it doesn't sound silly at all," Jessica said slowly.

"I'm so happy for you, dear," Mrs. Wakefield said, coming over to give Sue a hug. "And I know your mother would be very happy too. And now," she said, glancing at her watch, "I better get to the office. Girls, I've volunteered you to help Sue pick out a wedding dress today. I'm sure you'll find something special. I only wish I could come too—if I weren't so busy . . ."

"Don't worry, Mom. It'll be fun to help Sue find a dress. I think we'll start with the bridal department at Lytton & Brown, and then work our way across town," Elizabeth said.

"Good plan. I've got to run now. See you guys later.
